New Delhi: The National Crime Records Bureau reported that in 2022, the highest number of road crash deaths in the country took place in the national capital, where 2,103 people lost their lives.
The ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022’ report revealed that Delhi not only had the highest number of road accidents, totaling 5,387, but also recorded 1,412 deaths resulting from these fatal road accidents.
Across 53 megacities, including Delhi, the majority of road accident deaths were recorded to over-speeding, accounting for 51.5 percent, followed by dangerous or careless driving/over-taking at 31.3 percent, and driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol at 2.7 percent.
During 2022, a total of 68,236 road accidents were reported across 53 cities in the country, resulting in 57,246 injuries and 17,680 deaths, as per the provided data.
The NCRB report comprised data on road accidents, railway accidents, and railway crossing accidents, highlighting these as the primary contributors to accidental deaths. Road accidents constituted 97.3 percent of the total accidents recorded in the report.
The majority of these accidents occurred in proximity to residential areas, accounting for 29.1 percent, followed by industrial areas at 9.7 percent, and areas around educational institutions like schools and colleges at 8.7 percent.
Delhi claimed the top spot among cities with the highest number of railway accidents in 2022, contributing to 50.9 percent of the total mishaps, as highlighted in the report.
